Olympics for Hipsters: The Indy 500 It’s Not
"Nobody was supposed to show up for the Idiotarod, the annual absurdist shopping cart race, until 1 p.m. last Saturday. The race’s starting point was a closely guarded secret until the day before, and the Carts of Brooklyn Racing Association, its sponsor, had urged people gathering for the 1:30 start time to keep a low profile.
....
Meanwhile, the five-member teams kept arriving: one team dressed as the Village People, another as five versions of the 1980s Domino’s Pizza mascot, the Noid. One team wore ugly sweaters and Bill Cosby masks; another group was dressed as librarians and pushed a cart full of books. The eventual winner was a team called Colonel Angus."
Oh hell yeah!

While I loves me some geektoys, having a work laptop means I can't not-work when it snows because I "can't make it into the office due to weather" doesn't fly when the office is virtual. Or when I live an 'exercise-enthusiasts' walk from work and my boss knows it. Sure, it's only 2.5 miles and getting there is all down hill, but given the snow and my predisposition towards falling when it's a clear 90 degrees out, taking the trip mostly on my ass isn't appealing.
Don't get me wrong, I REALLY HATE snow and cold-wetness, in that order. Especially when I have meetings at *$$#$%@ 7:15am. Getting home would be all up hill. While I could use this as an opportunity to generate stories for the-children-I-won't-have stories about how rough it was back in the day, it's worth the necessary yoga it will take from contortioning a laptop-useful position either on the couch or from under a pile of covers on the bed to experience the snow through the window and no closer.
But I still have to work. And write my year end review. *woe*
It sorta makes me feel like my ass is corporate-owned. And not in a good way.

My Ipod just went through the following shuffle:
ABBA - Thank you for the music
Then...
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
I have no idea how any of these songs ended up there. They are NOT in any playlist I setup. Weird.

In times of economic downturn and career instability, I start to plan escapes. Whilst looking at Rough Guide World Party I found this.
Up-Helly Aa in Lerwick, Scotland
Around a thousand people, many of them costumed Vikings, complete with winged helmets, axes and shields and flaming torches, take to the streets of Lerwick in the Shetlands on the last Tuesday of January to drag a Viking galley through the town. It’s set up on the seafront, and then everyone hurls their torches on board and it’s razed to the ground, at which point everyone disappears off to the pub.
Cajun, why did this make me think of you?

What is it about post-apocalyptic dystopian zombie movies that invokes the desire to have an decent disaster kit and a really big machete? Is it just me? Have I been spending too much time by myself lately?
... I'm guessing that's a 'yes'.
I just have that creeping feeling that if the world were to go to shit, the cute, cubby, clumsy girls might have difficutly transforming into the lithe ass-kicking babes of celluloid galmour. Then again, I do have personal-space issues, which probably extend to zombies and other forms of civil unrest (though aparently not to middle-eastern countries, subways, or particularly sketchy parts of town after dark, go figure), so maybe I would survive past the first 12 minutes of world-wide disaster. Do they allow fat chicks into totalitarian or barbarian societies? Are there short, squatty evil hench-heroines with a predisposition towards survival in the grand scheme of the new world order?
I think I need to stop falling asleep with the TV on...

I am getting old. This proves it: Growing Up Grunge...
The sad thing is, this guy is from New Jersey. The sadder thing? He likely purchased his clothes new from Wal-Mart as opposed to Value Pillage, La Sal, or Goodwill.
Ah, to recall back in the day when 6000 people showed up to see Mudhoney at Pain in the Grass at the Seattle Center and The trEnd actually played "Alternative" music.
Now all I need is see Seaweed in a dive bar in Tacoma, try to sneak into 'The Underground', or grab coffee at The OK Hotel and my life will make one big full grunge circle (oh, add Lollipalooza too). Then, a few years later, I could hit AJ's apartment on 19th and East Thomas where they filmed Singles.
Don't I sound all trite and trendier-than-thou or rather more authentically grunge. Groan.
In all actuality, while going to college (though still technically in high school) grunge was a slight speed bump in my musical ramblings somewhere between transitioning from The Teardrop Explodes to discovering Bad Religion.
Whilst I'm marching mopey down memory lane, here are a few firsts cirra 1993...
( Read 'Em and weep here... )
Be amused. Be very, very amused.

You all know that 99.9995% of my post are friends-only, right?
It seems as though my trip to Naw'lins hath flipped my internal switch from anti-socially-angsty-at-the-world to 'satisfy me with adventurous amusement and wanderlust'. I'll be in NYC in August, so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated... Who's going to Convergence?

Face to Face – over it |

Hmmm, I should have something thoughtful to say.
...nah.
(NOTE: Do not read further if you do not want a graphic description of gross. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.)
I came down with food poisoning on Monday. Isn't that charming? There is nothing like blowing chunks exorcist style all over the floor of the bathroom whilst diving for a deposit to the porcelain gods. Oh yeah, oh baby, did I mention that I was at work? Did I mention the sheer velocity sprayed it up the walls and down the front of my work clothes (including my socks)? Ah, there is nothing like washing your shirt in the sink at 10:30am at work after cleaning up said bathroom stall, in hopes of getting myself presentable enough to walk back through cubeland to retrieve keys and purse-like-object, so I can go home to puke in one’s own sink located conveniently next to the toilet. Did I mention I felt fine when I got to work at 8am that very morning?
Even better, did I mention the said object of internal combustive explosion and said forward prolusion was corned beef and cabbage? The likes of which took 3 days to excavate pink and frothy from my internal organ configuration at the expense of countless bottles of vitamin water because shooting applesauce violently through my nose, while less vile, is much more acidic and therefore searing? Yay! Did I mention I don’t get paid for sick time? Happy Dance. That’s just the way to make a lady free Teh Sex-hay. Yeah, baby! Bow-chick-bow-bow. :D
